TO HELP YOU GROW, AND TO HELP YOU BE JESUS' FRIEND TO OTHERS AS WE GO, SOW AND GROW WITH THE LIVING CHRIST!

Shoan Zeleke ( our missionary to Ethiopia), asked this question of us one Sunday:  “What is harder, to bring a child into the world, or to raise that child?”   (see answer below...)

What are the three essential areas where we want to see health and growth in this person?

One of the most powerful “tools” you can have for a friend is a vision for how God sees them, their needs, and their potential in the Kingdom.

      BECOMING INTENTIONAL

The answer of course, is to raise, or disciple that child. Birthing is comparatively easy compared to nurturing, training, teaching, and mentoring.   We live in an age where a serious lack of fathering and mothering has created a society of dysfunctional adults.  At the same time, the church of America is full of baby, "broken-wing" Christians, as well as unregenerated religionists and legalists.

This section, along with the book, "Grow with the Living Christ," is designed to help you become one of those who does the one thing Jesus asked us to do before His Ascension:  Disciple. This is one of the great delights of the Christian life!  God uses ordinary believers, when we simply make ourselves available. Jesus calls us to be His light to the world (Matthew 5). If you think about it, when is it most fun to hold a candle (or a flashlight)? Outside a high noon, or inside some dark, gloomy place? Jesus sends His people to the dark corners of the globe to shine His bright light, promising to be always on our team, to never leave us or forsake us (Matthew 28, Hebrews 12).

The world is full of pre-formatted seekers and wounded believers anxious to hang out with us. If you are part of the Body of Christ, this isn’t any more something you “decide” to do or not to do. It is what “your” Body is designed to do all the time. You can resist it, hinder it, grieving or quenching the Spirit, or you can just relax, and find your place in what God is doing.

We will always have real heart energy and time for what God has called us to do.

After all, investing in relationships over a period of months or even years is costly, and friends can let you down. But one thing is certain: the Holy Spirit is placing someone in the path of each believer already (Eph. 2:10) who is attracted to them, seeking to find out what “makes them tick”.

DISCIPLESHIP IS RAISING UP LEADERS, not FOLLOWERS!

Everyone needs a Mission Statement for his or her life, helping identify what significant callings God has given them.  Every person longs to be significant.  If we don’t tell them, they won’t know.  It is “false humility” to not claim what our giftings are.    Beverly McIntyre used to say that when people told her, “It wasn’t me, it was the Lord” in refusing to receive her thanks, she would kid them (with a serious intent), “No, if it was the Lord it would have been perfect!” All of us are called to be Leaders influencing others around us for the Kingdom of God.

Followers “bleat”, complain (i.e. Don’t take responsibility.)

Leaders take responsibility.

A person who leads Followers ADDS (i.e. he enjoys being needed, it’s his job security)

A person who leads Leaders MULTIPLIES (i.e. he wants to be succeeded)

To raise a Follower, focus on their weaknesses. (It is easy to find where someone doesn’t “measure up”)

To raise a Leader, focus on their strengths. (“You are surpassing me spiritually.”  As Christians we ought to be the most generous people in the world, not just with our money, but with words: “I believe in you!”)

To raise a Follower, teach them to listen to you.

To raise a Leader, teach them to hear God.

To raise a Follower, lift up yourself.

To raise a Leader, lift up others.

To raise a Follower, just hang out, ask for every little commitment.

To raise a Leader, Invest time, require more, and involve them in ministry.
